The day was well advanced when she stepped through the door to her Denver apartment. Throwing her bag down, she gave the previous day’s mail a cursory glance. Nothing of any importance.

All she wanted was a shower and some rest. Her mind needed sleep – both to regenerate and to shut off the torrent of thoughts within.

More likely to sulk and brood. Be honest with yourself.

Exhaustion crept over her. Though she knew her bed was a shamble and possibly well past laundry day, she didn’t care.

Peeling off her clothes, she threw them in a heap on the hallway floor. Turning on the faucet, she let the water run. She wanted it good and hot. Sniffing at a towel, she decided it was clean enough for her purposes.

She really had to do some laundry and soon.

Steam began to build in the bathroom, and she felt her shoulders begin to relax in anticipation of the healing steam. Just a few more seconds, and she’d step into the tub.

“You’re a disgrace.”

Tyla jumped in surprise and wrapped the towel around her. Swirling to look behind her, she knew the voice of the speaker before she saw her. But she wanted to be sure.

“What the fuck? Can’t you wait just a second? I’m getting into the shower, Sage.” Tyla felt her shoulders tense up again – possibly worse than before.

“No, I can’t. How can I wait to tell you exactly how I feel about what a failure you are?”

She leaned casually in the doorway, steam pooling around her. Even though her body was relaxed, Tyla could see waves of anger emanating off her. They were so obvious they almost looked like they were mingling with the steam.

“What are you talking about? And why can’t we talk later? Like, in about eight hours?”

“Don’t play coy or dumb. You’ve already embarrassed yourself enough. Do you think we don’t know what you’ve been up to? Do you think we’re stupid?”

Tyla clutched her towel and merely shrugged. She didn’t want to give anything away.

“You had him in your clutches. You had every opportunity to end it. Finish him off once and for all. Hell, even take some trophies if you want.”

“Sage, I…”

“Let me finish! You failed. Completely. What galls me more is that you chose to lose. You chose to betray yourself, your family, your heritage…”

Tyla’s chest constricted at her words. The steam was the only thing keeping her lungs expanding and contracting. She knew Sage was right, but she didn’t have the stamina to take her punishment at that moment.

Instead, she merely dropped her head to her chest. The ultimate gesture of defeat.

“No, princess. You don’t get to hang your pretty head and think you’re off the hook. You get one more chance.”

Tyla lifted her head and looked at her sister, her brows raised in confusion.

“Fulfill your duty. Kill the dragon. Or I go to the Council of Hunters. To tell them personally of your – shortcomings.”

With that said, Sage turned and shut the bathroom door, leaving Tyla standing in the mist.
